CEO of Trek Bicycles Presents in Omaha

(Omaha, NE – November 4, 2008) John Burke, CEO of Trek Bicycle Corporation, will visits Omaha on November 11 for a public presentation discussing the role that bicycle friendly communities can play in solving global issues.  Activate Omaha and WELCOM, in partnership with Midwest Cycling, are sponsoring a lunch on November 11 from 11:30am – 1:00pm at UNO’s W.H. Thompson Alumni Center (6705 Dodge Street). The general public is invited to attend, and is asked to please RSVP to info@activateomaha.org or (402) 934-5923.

Mr. Burke will discuss how the nation is realizing that bicycle friendly communities can work to address a myriad of issues for one’s community. These issues include impacting the obesity epidemic, traffic congestion, pollution, dependence on foreign oil and carbon footprints. Creating bicycle friendly is accomplished through combining good city design and city policy supports with strategically targeted transportation dollars. In addition to Mr. Burke, Andy Clarke, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclist, will present.  Andy has a strong policy background and will speak to how to create, interpret, and implement multi-modal transportation models that can make Omaha more bicycle/walking friendly. Andy will also address how Omaha can be a leader in creating bicycling friendly companies. Omaha has previously applied to be designated by the League of American Bicyclist as a bicycle friendly community. Despite our expansive recreational trail system, the application was denied.  Since then, efforts have been underway to change that outcome. Over $500,000 in private funding has been raised to design and build a 20 mile bicycle loop.  The first bicycle transportation map has been created. The City has instituted a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to review and recommend infrastructure improvements. This momentum is just the beginning and we would like you to join us to continue the push to change the physical face of our community. Your involvement in this issue can help the metro Omaha area create an environment where people are active and outdoors on a daily basis. We are pleased to invite you to attend and participate in an important discussion on utilizing the bicycle as a simple solution to many of the complex problems facing the Omaha metro area. For more information, visit HUwww.activateomaha.orgUH, or contact Tammie Dodge at info@activateomaha.org or (402) 934-5923. Related Links:HUMidwest CyclingUHUActivate OmahaUHUWELCOMUHUTrek Bicycle CorporationUHULeague of American BicyclistsU Contact:Jay Thomas | Co-FounderDirector of Personnel & MarketingMidwest Cycling LLCOmaha, NEPhone: (402) 770-6427Email:    HUjay@trekbicyclestores.comU

0, 2008. With many sections of standing water on the course and a forecast calling for even more rain overnight, the decision to postpone was not preferred, but definitely necessary to maintain the integrity of the trails.

“Even if we have a day without rain tomorrow, the course is so saturated it would not make a difference. In order to preserve the trail work that has been done by members of THOR (Trails Have Our Respect) and the Midwest Wheelmasters, we need to leave the trail be for at least 2-3 days,” explains Co-Race Director, John Lefler, Jr.

Track & Back

Got this from the “in box” this morning, check it out…

Mark, I’d spoken with you via email briefly earlier this Summer regarding a 50 & 100mile bike ride taking place in Central Iowa on October 18th, 2008. It’s called Track and Back – “One Hilluva Ride”. It begins in Des Moines and proceeds East to the Iowa Speedway where riders are then served lunch and get to ride their bikes around the “official NASCAR” race track. They’ll then head back to Des Moines for a post ride party. We’ve got light breakfast of bagels, yogurt, fruit, Danish, coffee and OJ before the start. Deli sandwiches, chips & cookies for lunch and a post ride BBQ dinner for all participants. There are also 3 Aid/H2O stations along the route, each being hit twice by riders because it’s an “out and back”. Last years inaugural rider raised just under $7,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs and we’re aiming much higher this year!

Lastly, we’ve also got many “giveaway” prizes for only participants to win. We aren’t diluting the chances either by selling additional tickets either. If there is 250 riders, participants will have a 1 in 250 chance of winning. We’ve even got a brand new road bike being donated by a local bike shop.
