Day #2 we opted for climbing Luz Ardiden. The weather was cool and threatening rain, so the Tourmalet was a bit risky as it is a longer climb further from our base. This was the HC climb that Lance was knocked off his bike by the kid with the musssette bag. We all agreed it was a tougher climb than the Hautcam. We ended up in the clouds again, but this time at 44 degrees and light rain. This made the descent a bit sketchy and very cold. Max speeed was 44.5 mph on the way down. Most of the pitches on the way up were in the 10-12% gradient range for 13km.
Needless to say wet rims and pavement made us ride conservative on the way down. Add carbon rims into the mix and I thought I was going to end up skipping a switch back. Sure, I would have been the first one down the mountain, but I am quite sure my wife and kids would not appreciate my new look.
The lower pic was the road climbing up to the base of Luz Ardiden from our hotel. A beautiful ride.
Tomorrow we are off to climb the first Cat 3 climbs in Sunday’s race and then to the race village to get our packets. We were joined today by Marco Vasquez of Team Kaos. The Midwest will have great representation at this year’s race. We will keep you posted on the results.

MCC riders Kevin Limpach, Kent McNeill and Steve Jarrett standing at the top of the Hautacam in southern France yesterday. The climb took them into the clouds and beyond. When they turned around to start the descent, they realized “Jedi” mind tricks were going to be in order. “Use the force Luke!”…were the last words uttered as the group descended reaching speeds of 45mph+. By evidence of this post, they made it out alive. Next Stop: Tourmalet

Our own Midwest Cycling Community Home Boy Aaron Pool is riding the Tour of Pennsylvania this week. Aaron was only 14 seconds back after this mornings TT, and finished with the pack at 36th in the evenings crit. Alex Boyd of Papillion is also racing and had a nice 11th place finish in Tuesday Nights Crit. Way to go guys. Follow the results at the web page below. Oh by the way they are racing for a $150,000 in payouts, kind of makes that top Psycowpath payout of $150 seem silly.

Pete Duryea took over the lead last Tuesday with a time of 33:53. That equates to just over 25 mph. That is pretty impressive considering that the wind gusts were over 30 mph.
I’ve had a couple of questions concerning the time trial, so here are some specifics:
You can do the time trial every week, or just once.
There is no fee. Just show up a few minutes in advance to check in.
Anyone can ride the time trial. You do not have to be a member of the Midwest Cycling Community.
I’ll see you Tuesday night.

Greg “elbows” Shimonek pulled of a double state champion weekend with his ferocious sprinting style taking the gold in both Cat 3 and Masters 3-4 45+. He was followed by Kevin Limpach who took silver in the event. Paul Webb managed to win the Cat 4 road race, followed by teammate Gary Nebeker. Paul also managed to take the silver in the State Crit Championships as well. Great job guys! Additional road results can be found at

Congratulations to Kerri Peterson on her 1st place finish in the womens category, and to all Midwest Multi-sport members who participated. Complete results can be viewed at: http://www.norfolkymca.org/adult-fitness/2008-triathlon/

While the road was beckoning some, the dirt was beckoning others. MCC members enjoyed the dry dirt in Landahl park outside of Kansas City, while placing the MCC colors all over the podium. The “Real Deal” Steve Jarrett took the overall in the men’s Pro/Expert open field that was stacked with talent from around the region. Mark Studnicki (Local Cycling) and Kent McNeill rounded out the podium in 3rd and 4th spots respectively. Tom Price (Fisher 29er Crew) took home 2nd place in the expert 40-49 ,Brad Sullivan (Local Cycling) 2nd Expert 19-29 (on a singlespeed), Elizabeth Heal (Fisher 29er Crew) 2nd Expert Women, Ben Perkins 4th Sport 19-29, Chris Peterson 3rd Sport 30-39,Kory Hill 1st Sport 40-49,Anne Savery 1st Sport Women, and Troy Nelson 3rd Singlespeed. 14 podium spots in all for the day, not to mention the amount of schwag won by the crew…..
Noteworthy placings in the “Schwag” competition go to Troy Nelson 1st place, and Chris Peterson 2nd place!

Manawa is cancled and no new date has be announced yet, my guess would be in 2 weeks the week before Ponca.
I will be riding on the road both days. Looking at riding as much as possible.
Saturday I would like to start around 12:30 and meet along 370 between HWY50 and 48th Street. Would like to ride 4+ hours.
Sunday I plan on meeting a group at Lifetime Fitness at 8:00 am for their new outdoor ride.
Anyone interested in riding either day? Any other groups riding?
