| 0, 2008. With many sections of standing water on the course and a forecast calling for even more rain overnight, the decision to postpone was not preferred, but definitely necessary to maintain the integrity of the trails. “Even if we have a day without rain tomorrow, the course is so saturated it would not make a difference. In order to preserve the trail work that has been done by members of THOR (Trails Have Our Respect) and the Midwest Wheelmasters, we need to leave the trail be for at least 2-3 days,” explains Co-Race Director, John Lefler, Jr. |

Got this from the “in box” this morning, check it out…
Mark, I’d spoken with you via email briefly earlier this Summer regarding a 50 & 100mile bike ride taking place in Central Iowa on October 18th, 2008. It’s called Track and Back – “One Hilluva Ride”. It begins in Des Moines and proceeds East to the Iowa Speedway where riders are then served lunch and get to ride their bikes around the “official NASCAR” race track. They’ll then head back to Des Moines for a post ride party. We’ve got light breakfast of bagels, yogurt, fruit, Danish, coffee and OJ before the start. Deli sandwiches, chips & cookies for lunch and a post ride BBQ dinner for all participants. There are also 3 Aid/H2O stations along the route, each being hit twice by riders because it’s an “out and back”. Last years inaugural rider raised just under $7,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs and we’re aiming much higher this year!
Lastly, we’ve also got many “giveaway” prizes for only participants to win. We aren’t diluting the chances either by selling additional tickets either. If there is 250 riders, participants will have a 1 in 250 chance of winning. We’ve even got a brand new road bike being donated by a local bike shop.
I will be leading the last TNRR from HG Omaha this Tuesday 8/26/08. Will leave at 6:00 and try and ride the complete loop. I will not be able to lead this ride for the rest of the year do to a conflict with my sons football practice.
Thanks to all who came and rode this year. It was a lot of fun and hope we can continue it next year.
Trek Omaha still should have their Wednesday night ride going.

Congrats to all that raced at Tranqulity. Above is a link for the results.
Kent had a great race and fell just short of beating Cam who hasn’t been beat yet in this series , sounds like he wasn’t 100% after his 18th place at Leadville the previous Saturday. Jay was able to hang on and get in the top 5 in Expert Open in his first MTB race of the year.
Greg Shimonek had a great race winning the Expert Master class by 3+ minutes. Mike Bartels also had a great race and finished 3rd in Masters.
Paul Webb continued his great year with another win also winning by 3+ minutes. Paul has had a great year on and off road with several wins in both and just upgraded to a Cat 3. Look for Paul to continue to improve, he is a great rider and is realy motivated. Paul should win the Sport open and move up to Expert Open next year.
Chris Peterson Won the Sport 35+ class, he showed up minutes before the race and had never rode there, plus also was just back from Leadville. Kory Hill and Mark Butler finished 2nd and 3rd. Mark is having a great year also, second race in a row that he finished 3rd which is his best place in sport over the years. Look for Mark to continue to improve also, he realy like his new Yeti and is riding realy great.
Charlie won sport women.

Fellow mtb enthusiasts:
Thought you might be interested in a friendly (and free) show-and-go organized ride on the Omaha city trails and including loops through two of the finest single track loops in the area - the first Omaha Urban MTB Team Enduro is this Saturday Aug. 23. The team format and a few Check Points along the way (and maybe a surprise or two) are similar to “Adventure Race” events although this’ll be all bike and no running or kayaks (this time). Distance will be roughly 30 miles on paved city trails/streets and each single track loop is about 5-6 miles. This will be an unsupported ’for fun’ ride. A great training opportunity (teams will be timed and ranked at the finish).
The simple facts:
Who: Experienced mountain bikers with legs and lungs enough to go 4+hours
What: Free recreational group ride around Omaha
When: Saturday August 23, 4pm pre-ride meeting & instructions, 4:30 start.
Where: Start and finish at parking lot next to Qdoba Mexican Grill, 2101 N. 120th Street, Omaha Nebraska (one block north of Blondo on 120th)
Exact route will be revealed at the pre-ride meeting.
Why: Just for fun and camaraderie!
Fees: None! You must be self-supporting and you buy your own food and drinks.
Mandatory Gear List and more info can be found at www.AdventureRacingOmaha.com
In the case of rain or muddy conditions, we’ll re-route the ride so as not to damage the single-track courses. We will go rain or shine. Course and distances may change as conditions dictate.
Feel free to show up early and enjoy some appetizers at Qdoba before the start. Plan to join us for a drink afterward at the Caddy Shack bar next door to Qdoba.

Congratulations to all MCC riders who finished this year’s Leadville 100. If you want to read a recap of the event, follow the link below. Be forewarned before you read, you may just want to sign up next year if you do. So be prepared…..be very prepared!
MCC riders Steve Jarrett, Chris Peterson, Jim Maaske, Lowell Petersen, and Kent McNeill have arrived in Leadville, CO and are desperately searching for oxygen. They are set to do a recon ride on friday for the 100 mile off-road race known as the Leadville 100. Leadville, affectionately known as the 2 mile high city resting at 10,200 feet will be the start of the race at 6:30am on Saturday morning. The race climbs up to 12,600 feet before returning back down to the city of Leadville. The race course boasts a total of 14,000 feet of climbing over 5 peaks. This year, not only will our MCC crew be flying the colors, but Lance Armstrong will be on the start line to see if he can break the winning streak of 5 time Champion Dave Weins.
Our MCC crew will send pictures and recaps of this years event. Stay tuned…….
I will not be able ride tonight.
Please feel free to ride the course on your own or check out the Tuesday night Time trial at the entrance to NP Dodge Park. Starts at 6pm.

see you next week.
Below is copy from a public notice that has been circulated from the Omaha Parks, Recreation & Public Property Department. This looks like an excellent opportunity to show our city planners the support base for continued development of our city trails network. As the notice says, it isn’t a formal presentation - you can swing through anytime between 5:30 and 7:30 pm this Thursday July 24th. The meeting is at Karen Western Elementary School - just 100 yards off of the Keystone Trail next to Karen Swimming Pool (about 1/10th mile north of L Street).
Please try to find time in your busy schedules to stop in and tell these folks you enjoy and respect the great trails we already have AND tell them YOU support the continued trail development.
“An open house to view the preliminary alignment of the new Keystone East Connector Trail will be held on Thursday, July 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Karen Western Elementary School , 6224 H Street . Enter the school on the south side, main entrance.
The proposed alignment of this trail begins in Karen Park near the Papillion Creek trail bridge and will extend east to 60th Street along the north and east sides of Buckingham Avenue to 60th Street . East of 60th Street , the trail will use the former Chicago Northwestern Railway right-of-way stopping near the intersection of 45th & Dayton Streets.
The purpose of the open house is to discuss the preliminary alignment with adjacent landowners, neighbor residents and interested citizens; to answer questions and receive comments from the public. There will be no formal presentation. You may come at any time during the two hour period to visit with City staff and their consultant about the project.
The project is being sponsored by the City of Omaha, Nebraska Department of Roads and the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District.
For further information on the public information meeting, contact Brian Pecka, landscape architect, Big Muddy Workshop, Inc., 4502 South 42nd Street , Omaha , NE 68107-1059 . Or call (402) 344-8711.”
Folks have been asking for a recap of this year’s E’tape. I pulled together a play-by-play with a couple of pictures, but didn’t have time to enter it all in the blog. So check out the link below and you can open up a PDF file and read all about the race.
Thanks,
Kent

Day #2 we opted for climbing Luz Ardiden. The weather was cool and threatening rain, so the Tourmalet was a bit risky as it is a longer climb further from our base. This was the HC climb that Lance was knocked off his bike by the kid with the musssette bag. We all agreed it was a tougher climb than the Hautcam. We ended up in the clouds again, but this time at 44 degrees and light rain. This made the descent a bit sketchy and very cold. Max speeed was 44.5 mph on the way down. Most of the pitches on the way up were in the 10-12% gradient range for 13km.
Needless to say wet rims and pavement made us ride conservative on the way down. Add carbon rims into the mix and I thought I was going to end up skipping a switch back. Sure, I would have been the first one down the mountain, but I am quite sure my wife and kids would not appreciate my new look.
The lower pic was the road climbing up to the base of Luz Ardiden from our hotel. A beautiful ride.
Tomorrow we are off to climb the first Cat 3 climbs in Sunday’s race and then to the race village to get our packets. We were joined today by Marco Vasquez of Team Kaos. The Midwest will have great representation at this year’s race. We will keep you posted on the results.
MCC riders Kevin Limpach, Kent McNeill and Steve Jarrett standing at the top of the Hautacam in southern France yesterday. The climb took them into the clouds and beyond. When they turned around to start the descent, they realized “Jedi” mind tricks were going to be in order. “Use the force Luke!”…were the last words uttered as the group descended reaching speeds of 45mph+. By evidence of this post, they made it out alive. Next Stop: Tourmalet
Here are a few details if you would like to help with clean up on the Wabash Trace.
1) Tuseday July 1st between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. meet and the Council Bluffs trailhead and volunteers will team up in trucks and work their way to Mineola.
2) Saturday July 5th all day call Greg Losh 712-326-8207 for details.
Our own Midwest Cycling Community Home Boy Aaron Pool is riding the Tour of Pennsylvania this week. Aaron was only 14 seconds back after this mornings TT, and finished with the pack at 36th in the evenings crit. Alex Boyd of Papillion is also racing and had a nice 11th place finish in Tuesday Nights Crit. Way to go guys. Follow the results at the web page below. Oh by the way they are racing for a $150,000 in payouts, kind of makes that top Psycowpath payout of $150 seem silly.
It looks as though it is going to rain for the next few hours, so we will pick up the time trial series again next week.
Jackie
